Five siblings inherit a blanket. They lie beneath it, together, to stay warm.
But arms and legs stick out and the siblings squabble and tug. They do
not realize that they would all fit if they just moved closer together.

This is the Blanket Story. Poets, artists, and musicians have responded to this tale in creative ways. All poems appear here, our ONLINE POETRY SHOWCASE. Visit our main page to find out more about the project.

A great man with a loving wife

A great man with a loving wife,
bore five children with cherished joy.
To these children they gave their hearts,
and wrote a will to keep them safe through stormy nights.
With love they wrote the will,
leaving the five children all their wealth,
and a single special blanket,
to keep them warm through the harsh bitter bite of winter’s mouth.

Five children shared this one blanket,
on cold nights when the fierce winter’s climate made the air too harsh to bear.
Underneath that blanket the children were at peace,
until one of the children noticed how their feet were cold,
tugging at the blanket they all began to pull and tug,
until two left the soft warm embrace of the blanket.

Alas they did not realize,
realize how with a close proximity to each other,
they could all be warm and far from the knife that winter wields.

All they needed was each other, and their blanket.
Together warm and away from the heatless void of a winters night.
For in that blanket, lay the love of their family,
the love and devotion symbolically woven into the sentiment of the blanket.
