Five siblings inherit a blanket. They lie beneath it, together, to stay warm.
But arms and legs stick out and the siblings squabble and tug. They do
not realize that they would all fit if they just moved closer together.

This is the Blanket Story. Poets, artists, and musicians have responded to this tale in creative ways. All poems appear here, our ONLINE POETRY SHOWCASE. Visit our main page to find out more about the project.

Blanketing His Love

Five brothers squawk beneath a coverlet
their father bought to succor all of them.
Did this paternalistic man forget
that growing kids need to let out the hem
of trousers that they comfortably wear
when young? No wonder that they fight for space
who grow in size as their horizons bare
new options. But their father had the grace
to sensibly ensure there’d be less room
for each of them in turn. For they’d forgo
their blanket for another from the loom
of their maturity. As such they’d sew
according to their weaving expertise,
acquired once the blanket bared their knees.
